Mr Alisdair Felstead
MBBS MSc FRCS (Orth)

Mr Felstead has been a full time NHS consultant at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth, since 2022.  He specialises in foot and ankle, trauma and limb reconstruction surgery.

​

He undertook specialist orthopaedic training in Surrey and Sussex, followed by fellowships in foot and ankle surgery at QA, and trauma and limb reconstruction at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton.  He develops his knowledge by visiting experts worldwide.

​

Mr Felstead has published on topics such as novel techniques in orthopaedics and bone and joint infection.  He is the resident doctor lead at Queen Alexandra Hospital, organises the journal club and regular teaching.  He also teaches and supervises the senior foot and ankle fellow.

Mr Felstead's research:

​

  • Continuous Compression Implants (CCIs): Co-authored research on the use of nitinol CCIs for midfoot and hindfoot surgery, highlighting their role in promoting bone healing and offering alternatives to traditional plate-and-screw fixation.

  • Osteochondral Lesions of the Talus: Evaluated the inter- and intra-observer reliability of the AMADEUS tool for quantifying talar shoulder osteochondral defects, finding it to be a reliable tool with moderate variability.

  • Periprosthetic Joint Infection (PJI): Investigated methods to improve the diagnosis of infections in hip and knee replacements, such as combining synovial white cell count (SF-WCC) and C-reactive protein (SF-CRP) to increase diagnostic sensitivity.

  • Foot and Ankle Clinical Outcomes: Analyzed clinical and radiological results of procedures like Lisfranc injury fusion and evaluated the reliability of posterior malleolus fracture classification systems.

  • Surgical Training Audit: Contributed to a national audit of clinical training exposure for junior doctors in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery. â€‹

 

He has published in journals such as the Journal of Clinical Medicine, Journal of Personalized Medicine, and Injury.
